Summer Stress Management

Proper foliar fertility applications are a cornerstone of summer stress management. Unbalanced fertility applications can sacrifice root growth for excessive top growth at a time when increased or sustained rooting amounts can help a turfgrass survive the heat and drought stress events of summer weather.

Much like the important roles nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium play in plant health, the importance of carbon cannot be denied. Carbon can actually act as a limiting nutrient if not maintained properly. With turfgrass constantly depleting carbon banks in soil, returning carbon can be a crucial step in building stronger, healthier turf better able to withstand summer stress.

THE VALUE OF HUMIC SUBSTANCES

Soil organic matter consists of plant and animal residues at various stages of decomposition. As much as 80% of this material is represented by humic substances, a highly-reactive, carbon-rich material that is recognized by most soil scientists and agronomists as the most important component of a healthy, fertile soil.[1]

Humic substances, including fulvic acids and humic acids, provide many benefits to both soil and plants, increasing soil microbial life, boosting cation exchange capacity (CEC) to prevent nutrient leaching, and improving water holding capacity. Humic acids enhance soil structure, support soil microbial activity, and increase micronutrient availability. This results in enhanced nutrient uptake, improved rooting, and healthier, stronger plants.

HUMIC COATED UREA (HCU®)

Humic Coated Urea (HCU 44-0-0) granules represent a sensible approach to nitrogen application, combining urea and humic acid in a 100% soluble granule featuring CarbonCoat™ Technology.

Compared to standard urea and stabilized urea sources, studies have shown the combination of urea and humic substances demonstrate increased overall rooting. Additionally, this combination has also been proven to provide more total root surface area than stabilized urea and is an excellent, cost-effective nutrition tool for combating the effects of summer stress in fairways through increased rooting, leading to improved nutrient and water use efficiency.
